The Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Holiday Commission is proud to announce that our 30th Annual Celebration Luncheon in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr will take place on Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Avenue. The luncheon will begin at 11:00 a.m. (doors open at 10:30 a.m.). Our theme is: The Ultimate Measure of a Man Is Not Where He Stands In Moments Of Comfort And Convenience, but Where He Stands in Times of Challenge and Controversy. Humility, justice, freedom, and love measured the character of our Keynote speaker, Mr. Henry “Hank” James Thomas, when he was confronted with challenges and controversy as a member of the Freedom Riders. In 1961, the Freedom Riders traveled on Greyhound and Trailway buses through the south to protest racial segregation. Confronted with hatred and death, the Freedom Riders and their brave journey became one of the most pivotal events in American History. Thomas emerged as a leader and an activist. He later served in the Vietnam War, was injured in battle and, came home with a purple heart. Hank Thomas received the “Buffalo Soldier” Award from Howard University in 2006. In 2011, he was inducted into the International Civil Rights “Walk of Fame.” He also received the McDonalds, Inc. 365 Black Award in 2011. He is currently Vice-President of Hayon Group, Inc. The Commission is excited to announce our special guest vocalist, Mr. Marvin Sapp, who was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sapp began singing in church at age four and ultimately became the all-time highest charting gospel artist in Billboard history. We eagerly look forward to your participation in this momentous community event. Purchase Ads for the Souvenir Booklet: Advertising space is available within the Luncheon Souvenir Booklet. For your convenience, we have enclosed a form for submission of a camera-ready advertisement. Upon request on the form, ads are in color.
